A message from the Local Organizing Committee
Calgary brings together scientific ambition, collaborative energy, and the distinctive character of Western Canada. It offers an especially timely setting for ISSR: a growing center for brain and mental health research, an accessible downtown meeting environment, and a gateway to some of Canada’s most remarkable landscapes.
Known for its expansive blue skies, welcoming spirit and location at the gateway to the Canadian Rockies, Calgary provides a fitting setting for ISSR 2027: Serotonin in the Blue Sky City. In addition to showcasing the latest advances in serotonin research, we aim to introduce delegates to Calgary’s vibrant neuroscience community and offer a taste of culture, hospitality and natural beauty of Alberta.
A strong neuroscience and mental health community
The University of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute brings together more than 380 scientists across nine faculties, supported by over 1,500 trainees, research staff, and support staff. Its research spans foundational, clinical, population-health, and translational neuroscience, creating a highly interdisciplinary environment for discovery, innovation and collaboration.
This community includes major strengths in brain and behavior, neurodevelopment, computational neuroscience, mental health, and neurotechnology. The Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education contributes particularly to relevant expertise in stress and resilience, youth mental health, psychedelics, and neuromodulation research. Together, these strengths create natural opportunities for exchange around affective disorders, brain-body signalling, emerging therapeutics, and the translation of fundamental neuroscience into better health care.
A strong neuroscience downtown setting
The Hyatt Regency Calgary is located in the heart of downtown and is directly connected to the TELUS Convention Centre, where the Canadian Neuroscience Meeting will be held immediately before ISSR 2027. Restaurants, public transit, arts and cultural attractions, river pathways, and informal gathering spaces are all nearby, making it easy to move between the scientific program, networking events, and the city itself. Calgary International Airport provides domestic and international connections, while the compact downtown location keeps local travel straightforward.
A gateway to Alberta and the Rockies
Calgary offers much more than a conference venue. Delegates can explore the city’s museums, live-music venues, public art, neighbourhoods, and extensive pathway system, or extend their visit to experience beautiful Alberta landscapes including the nearby Canadian Rockies. June offers long daylight hours and an inviting opportunity to combine scientific exchange with time outdoors before or after the meeting.
